Greater Adirondack Home Aides is a non-profit home health care agency licensed by the NYS Department of Health to provide home care services to individuals in the community. GAHA was established in 1965 by a group of women who recognized a need in the community for assistance to the elderly in activities of daily living.

Companions

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Must be eighteen years of age or older.
  • Ability to effectively communicate and interact with clients, families, and GAHA staff.
  • Ability to read and write at the eighth grade level.
  • Current driver’s license, proof of automobile insurance and daily availability of a vehicle for business use.
  • Visual and hearing capabilities functioning at a level sufficient to provide for the care of clients.
  • The Companion must be flexible, dependable and patient.
  • The Companion must be sensitive to the needs of the elderly/disabled.
  • Ability to lift grocery bags.

Basic Responsibilities:

  • The Companion must treat the client with dignity and respect at all times.
  • Must be prompt in arriving for cases and diligent in remaining for the specified time.
  • Must report and problems or concerns as soon as possible.
  • Respect the client’s privacy in accordance with HIPAA and NYS Confidentiality Laws.
  • Strive to maintain the client’s safety at all times.
  • To inform GAHA’s Scheduling Department of vacations, illness, etc. that would necessitate a substitute.
  • Refrain from the provision of personal care.
  • The Companion must read, sign and abide by GAHA’s Code of Conduct.

Sample Services:

  • Shopping.
  • Conversation.
  • Accompany on walks.
  • Meal Planning.
  • Watch television/DVDs/listen to the radio.
  • Assistance with note or letter writing.
  • Care for house plants.
  • Assist with pet care.
  • Participate in crossword puzzles, word jumbles, brain teasers, etc.
  • Light housekeeping.
  • Answer the phone.
  • Drop off and pick up prescriptions.
  • Provide limited assistance by helping to arrange for needed services (e.g. lawn care, snow removal , minor repairs, etc.) When helping to arrange services, the Companion must avoid conflicts of interest (e.g. hiring a Companion’s family member to provide lawn care).
  • Assist with mail.
  • Read newspaper/magazine articles, books, etc. especially for those with impaired vision.
  • Run errands.
  • Prepare meals ahead of time.
  • Prepare garbage for pickup.
  • Mail correspondence.
  • Laundry.
  • Other services as agreed by Client and Companion that do not involve transporting the client or providing personal care.

Please Note:

The Companion may decline requests for services that the Companion feels are inappropriate (e.g. transportation, something that would put the Client at risk, etc.) In this situation, the Companion should immediately contact GAHA’s Scheduling Department during business hours or the on-call person after hours for direction.

The client must be present in the home at all times when Companion services are delivered.
